When most people think of what it takes to set a Guinness World Record, they imagine holding insects in their mouth, juggling chainsaws, or pulling jumbo jets across a runway.  There is a different record, though, that all of us have experience with.  It is a gesture of good will, peace and friendship the world over: the handshake.

In recent years, “Longest Continuous Handshake” has been one of Guinness World Records’ most hotly-contested endurance categories.  Teams from Nepal to New Zealand and from London to Sydney have all broken the record on behalf of various charities, but they have never coordinated their efforts.

This event brings together some of the greatest record-breakers in the world -- same time, same place, same goal.  All the teams will start shaking hands at 8:00pm EST on January 14th, 2011, in Times Square, New York City.  The competition serves to raise funds and awareness for causes such as Teach for America, the American Red Cross, the Auckland Down Syndrome Association and the Women’s Foundation of Nepal.  The last team still shaking wins a majority of the proceeds of the event for the charity it’s competing for.

That’s where you come in.  Donate, cheer them on and spread the word.  By pledging only $1 per hour that the shake goes on, you can help to bring books to girls in the Himalayas or hope to America’s inner city youth.  Let your friends know that you are supporting this.  They can watch the event live on this website from anywhere in the world.
